    A head chef is employed tomanage the kitchen so it is essential that they have years ofexperience in both cooking and in a leadership role before beinghired as a head chef. Typically at least five years of relevantexperience in a professional kitchen is required for the role. Mosthead chefs start as kitchenhands before working their way up thekitchen ladder as cook commis chef chef de partie sous chef andfinally head chef. Importantly a head chef needs to have experiencein all areas of the kitchen from appetisers right through todesserts.

    Head chef education andtraining requirements

    Working as a headchef completed at least Year 10 schooling plus a threeyearapprenticeship as well as a relevant vocational qualification suchas the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery offered byTAFE.

    As every licensed food business inAustralia is required to have a nominated food safety supervisor itis also advisable for budding head chefs to complete a certifiedFood Safety Supervisor course.
