Burden of Long Working Hours

Burden of Long Working Hours

bac98d50.jpg

Ugh…employees who slog their energies beyond normal working hours, in fact, spoil their health with the burden of exhaustion and stress. It’s pity on stressed, weary and workaholic employees who lack genuine time off to have musing for social life.

Does it make sense to work overly long hours with no time for family, children’s well-being and personal work? Well, in name of overtime and for the sake of earning a little more, workers who toil long hours jeopardize the total fitness of their lives.

Obviously, you earn more by putting on excess hours—that’s counted as ‘overtime’, and at the end of the month, you get a ‘fat pay’. Don’t you think that you are earning stress too—that horrible stress, which can lead to many ailments?

If more and more work equates to wealth, then it brings in worries too. With no family gatherings and meaningful leisure, life becomes a humdrum routine of burdening work and unhealthy lifestyle.

Well, 'overtime', in the beginning, with extra pay looks alluring. But, in the long-run, load of overtime schedules will cause sleep deficiency, burnout and illnesses. And when health impairs, the only way out is to hook on to a series of medications or quit job with early retirement.

In fact, extended working hours can make a person more stressful, and thus causing high blood pressure or heart problems. Perhaps, one best way to make your employees more productive is to reduce working hours, allow them to have flexibility at the workplace and provide them recreational and sports activities.

Notably, when companies are flexible towards their employees, it becomes obligatory for the employees to be loyal, hardworking and truthful. When employees abuse their working hours, by escaping their tasks or reporting to work after extended lunch breaks, then that’s not the right attitude.

That’s okay when people work a little more or on rare occasions enjoy overtime schedule for some extra pay. But, getting addicted to daily overtime is all senseless. Indeed, some feel fortunate while working on days off, and if at all, they miss one day, they count it as a great loss.

What a paradox! We put extra efforts to work more, to earn more…and when it comes to leisure, it is discarded. When it comes to serious supplications, we do hastily as part-time worshippers. When it comes to necessary commitments, we keep things pending.

Funnily, those who forget their families and work fervently are typical employees as if they are married to their jobs. As long as money keeps coming with busy overtime schedules, they even don’t care about little nightly sleep. Oftentimes, they are so regimented and passionate in the making of their careers that they deliberately skip their meals and legitimate break-times.

For such workaholics, going to home is like taking a break for interim rest and sleep. And, as the day begins, they are least mindful about any significant chores, and with lethargic attitude and muddled minds, they leave their homes hurriedly to reach their workplaces.

In some cases, employees get stuck between normal working hours and compulsory overtime schedules. It’s silly when one cannot take weekly off, but has to report to the office even if there’s little or no work. Sometimes, one cannot apply for a full vacation, but has to take in two installments.

For instance, in companies where there’s demanding productivity, employees are privileged for overtime. None would refuse overtime when it comes easily. But, in the long run, employees who work beyond their regular working hours lose their health and motivation. Well, if a company lose exhausted employees, it tends to apply alternative strategy to recruit a new batch of manpower to keep its efficiency and productivity at desired levels.

On one side, there are company’s goals and objectives, and on the other side, there’s human ordeal and expectations. It’s all about the game where it’s hard to say who wins how much and who loses to what extent.

Toiling hard, with extra hours, for the sake of overtime money makes a person greedy as well as tired. What’s the logic when a person has more money, but no time to use it or even no time to enjoy moments of happiness.

Definitely, working hard is no bad thing, but too much of work, without rest, focus and rationality will put strain on our health, family ties and ruin our lives.

Good, inspiring quote of Tony Robbins. And thanks Preston \ud83d\udc1d Vander Ven so much for your comments. In fact, I must say that forgetting the very life pattern and becoming a workaholic is no sensible attitude. Let the weekends be reserved for your own self, family and kids, and a little further, finding time for socializing with relatives. Weekend is your right, after your escape from your work. And you’re not going to spoil your weekend, with more work-related tasks and plans to bring in more fatigue and fretfulness.

Thanks Jerry Fletcher for your thoughtful comments. Indeed, when one spends too much time in the work zone, then there’s so much of oblivion and insensitivity. Without liveliness and leisure moments, no person can be creative in a fullest manner.

Mohammed, James Webb Young, the brilliant copywriter that worked early on at J. Walter Thompson Advertising (celebrating 150 years in business) when asked how he came up with his ideas noted that you have to fill your mind with disparate knowledge, understand the problem and then turn your mind away from it preferably with some leisure activity. then, the solution will "simply occur to you." A creative director friend agreed and then pointed out that many times you will have more than one idea and that picking the right one is found through a process of "Murdering your darlings." Creativity suffers immensely when one spends too much time in the work zone. And so it goes.
