Obsession for Overtime
It’s okay if there are opportunities for overtime or compulsive overtime. But, some employees are so greedy that they always vie to have overtime schedules. If there isn’t overtime for them, they find idle time as if it's burdening boredom.
Let me narrate an interesting story. A person, who was working in a company, was so workaholic that even on the weekends he used to slog whole time at the workplace. Although, on the weekends, there was little work spanning to few hours, but, in the pretext of overtime, he used to come to the office. For any reason, if he was at his home, he used to feel disturbed and lonely. In fact, even if there was work or no work, he was addicted to the workplace atmosphere, and besides earning a good salary, he was more spirited by his overtime earnings.
Some workplaces are typical. Even if work can be completed during normal working hours, there’s always a slot of an hour or two of overtime work. Plus, two days of overtime during every weekend is like double jubilation for greedy workers.
In some companies, there’s practice of illegitimate overtime. For example, a senior technician felt that during the festival holidays there wasn’t any work for him. He could have easily relished his holidays in hundred ways. But then, he came up with a witty idea, and he requested his supervisor that some sort of work be given during the holidays. What then? He was privileged with plenty of overtime that was labelled as ‘work during shutdown’.
Employees who, besides regular duty, log plenty of overtime hours every week feel contented from the amazing amount of overtime they earn. So, they keep aside their salaries and keep a watch on their overtime monies.
What it means ‘loyalty to work’ for addicted overtimers? If they become diligent and engaged workers, they’ll be without overtime hours. In fact, their cleverness is in delaying work during normal working hours and completing the same work under the label of 'overtime roster'.
People say that the average employee only works for three hours a day. Or in other words, an employee is only productive for three hours. Rest of the hours are just wasted in unexpected work, ineffective meetings, pointless loitering, idle gossips, extended lunch breaks or time spent to show one’s presence in the workplace.
Anyways, we all cling to regimented working hours because that’s the rule. Well, if at all, work can be done during the normal hours then where’s the need for overtime?
Even big projects can be completed by having employees who work for few hours a day. If they are all productive, then work gets done within the timelines.
Let’s say, in a company, if there’s no fair scrutiny then employees begin to juggle their own work schedules. Beyond normal working hours, they get enrolled for overtime schedules every day and on all weekends in a year. That way they make more overtime money.
Frankly, employees who are least worried about their health tend to work overtime hours on daily basis and on weekends too. Stress is nothing for them as long as money keeps coming in. If they don’t get overtime work, they become fretful.
Presumably, there should be a ‘overtime policy’ that can remove unwanted overtime by
- Assessing staffing requirements,
- Managing work to utilize idle base hours
- Planning maintenance downtime,
- Avoiding material deficiencies
- Minimizing quality issues
Inessential overtime work comes from overtime abuse. It’s like theft or simply draining company’s coffers and spoiling workplace culture. Isn’t that awful situation?

Yes, when you want to enhance productivity and, on the other hand, have manpower shortage, then the only way out is to have compulsive overtime schedules. That way productivity increases while employees feel happy with their overtime earnings.

Yea, I do agree that 'not all people that work overtime are greedy'. For those workers who earn low wages, indeed, to them 'overtime' comes as extra bucks. Often, I have seen people who rely on overtime for their household expenses, and some portion of their salaries goes to little savings.
