Online Classes and Tired Mothers

Online Classes and Tired Mothers

5621969b.jpg

Presumably, every parent is either half-way or totally tired of virtual learning. Blame the COVID-19 pandemic that has messed up everything.

Not that teachers and students alone are involved in online classes, but tired mothers, like assistant tutors are bearing the burden of preparing their children for zoom classes, downloading online assignments and lessons, instructing their children what to do and what not to do, briefing them to practice assignments, recording audios and videos, and then uploading all those stuff. Too much, isn’t that?

What’s surprising is that what’s taught in school the same pattern children are made to follow in online studies. At least, there should be some relaxation in the virtual learning process because mothers are least familiar with teaching methodologies and they cannot play the roles of teachers in every manner besides handling domestic errands.

Mothers, nowadays, are like deputy teachers. With mobile devices in their hands, they are almost whole day busy. Imagine a typical mother of three – the way she has to start her day, prepare quick breakfast, make her kids ready for different slots with zoom, check WhatsApp groups for instructions, downloads or activity feedback, understand what tasks are ahead so as to tutor her kids the whole day. And then, at the end of the day, uploading assignments. Sometimes, even, on the weekends, there is some sort of activities in advance.

Perhaps, online learning set up works well for grown-ups, but not for kindergarten kids, and then zoom classes for lower primary students is non-sensical. It seems that schools want to keep students busier with the burden of online studies and activities so that they can justify for the tuition fees they are charging. Absurd, isn’t that?

It’s too hectic schedule with too many activities. Imagine besides household chores and parenting philosophy, mothers are struggling hard to cope with the burden of online classrooms. There’s every day schedule of downloading, uploading, printing worksheets, reading notifications, teaching, supervision, and then tracking the progress and performance of their kids.

What could happen, in some families, where mothers are less educated? Are they managing themselves or confused with the barrage of online platforms and learning patterns? From traditional classrooms to virtual learning, the transition looks like burdening on children, with too much of screen time and practice for online activities.

When it comes to online teaching methods, teachers are sometimes helpless. They do what they are instructed from their superiors. So, the responsible people are management committees and administrators who are charting out unplanned and loaded curricula.

The truth is that children cannot cope with e-learning tools and ways, and then not all children possess same level of learning capacities and adaptability. Too much of zoom in, zoom out, assignments and online activities are no good at all.

So, moderation of online teaching set up is the only solution. If a school doesn’t want to simplify distance learning system, then better parents decide what to teach and what to skip out to avoid unwanted head-aches and stress.

In fact, plunging into online learning set up, some parents (with one or two kids) are managing their schedules intelligently, some are struggling to learn online tools, and some are tolerating fatigue and frustration. Sad to say that one parent posted her comment, in a group chat, ‘this loads of assignments is going to kill me, if not corona’.

Mohammed, your portrait of the tired mother is totally accurate. My VA who is in the Philippines has a little one that just started kindergarten. She had to meet with the teacher for a briefing on the software her daughter will be using. I wonder what we we se as the impact of this virtual learning in 20 years?
