Course Objective

This online course will help nurses and other health professionals to effectively support people with diabetes and promote healthy lifestyles and self-management to achieve optimal control of the condition.

To mark World Diabetes Day 2020, the online course is available free until 31 March 2021.

Course duration
  • 60 minutes of self-paced learning to be completed within a month of enrolment.
  • 5 - 9 minutes per section.

Who is eligible?

  • All health professionals involved in diabetes management and care are eligible to take the course.
  • In particular, health professionals who work in isolated, remote settings and lack access to latest evidence-based education resources.

How does the course work?

To obtain your IDF Certificate of Completion and one European CME credit, you should work through the content in the following order.

  • You should start each section by clicking on the launch button. After completion of each section, the next section will be unlocked.
  • Module learning starts with 10 pre-test questions and ends with 10 post-test questions, all of which are in multiple choice format.


Minimum system requirements
  • Windows 7 and above, Mac OS X v10 or later, Linux-Chrome OS Internet Explorer 9 and above; Google Chrome; Safari and Firefox; iOS 9 and above (all iPad and android devices)
  • Headphone/speakers (optional) to listen to the module voice over

Assessment and Award

CME Accreditation

The European Accreditation Council accredits this online course for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME). 1 European CME credit (ECMEC®) will be awarded on successful completion of this course. Through an agreement between the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA), physicians may convert EACCME credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Dr. Serrabulho completed her Nursing degree in 1980 before specializing in Public Health in 1986 studying a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Lisbon University 2014. She also has a PhD and looked into “The health and lifestyles of young adults with type 1 diabetes”.

She currently works at the Portuguese Diabetes Association (APDP) and has been since 1992. Since 2006, she has been the APDP training Coordinator and the Nursing Coordinator since 2011.

Ana works as a Clinical and Health Psychologist and has been working in the Portuguese Diabetes Association (APDP) since 2000. She holds a Master’s degree in Health Psychology with post-graduate experience in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapy.

Ana also coordinates a training course- titled Communication Skills Development in Chronic Disease- for health professionals and university students.

Ka Hei Karen Lau, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCES, is a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. She provides patients with tailored nutrition and diabetes management care plans to help them attain better health and improved diabetes control.
