TOO MUCH OF OVERTIME

TOO MUCH OF OVERTIME

b278bc0c.jpg

On the whole, when overtime isn’t feasible and healthy practice, yet employees, at large, prefer not to abandon it. Any news of not having overtime or total stoppage will make them anxious.

It would be interesting to find out why some companies have a culture of overtime, in the name of required productivity and why employees, unmindful of health risks, still embrace overtime schedules on continuous basis.

Perhaps, one need to understand how the mechanism of overtime works and how employees partition their work-life balance.

Working beyond the legitimate hours to earn overtime, and forgetting yourself and giving no quality time to your family and kids and crucial chores is not at all a healthy equation.

Sometimes, without maximizing time efficiency, employees skip essential duties during the standard work hours. And then, with the greed of overtime hours at premium rate, they look out for extended hours and/or weekends to complete their tasks.

Frankly, employees tend to work overtime for the sake of earning more money because they are fairly paid while others work due to compulsory overtime for improved productivity at their workplaces. But, when employees are enforced to work excess hours and paid less overtime money, then that’s too unfair.

Reaping profits by burdening employees is totally brutal. Plainly, organizations, in order to escape from hiring extra staff, rather prefer to impose extended shifts with compulsory daily overtime. Tiring and boring long schedule isn’t that?

Ugh…employees, in some companies, check in early morning and after extended work shift, check out in the evening. And, by the time they reach home, it’s almost beginning of the night time.

Imagine, with a squeeze of remaining nightly hours, to what extent life can be enjoyable, recreational or sociable?

Agreed that employees who work more overtime hours want to see their families enjoy many benefits that money can buy. But what happens when they put more stress, spoil their health and remain no longer energetic to work long hours.

In some companies where production is in two shifts, some employees dearly prefer to work in night shifts. One such employee was in the habit of working in night shifts  (that included daily overtime by an hour  or little more) because being away from his family he found it peaceful with no pressure from his superiors. However, after working continuously in night shifts for three long years, he changed his roster to day shift as he was planning to go on vacation. Fortunately, he reached home, and after spending a day with his family suffered cardiac arrest, and on the way to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

That’s his sad story, but then, it should be a lesson to those who toil hard erratically and forget about their health for the sake of earning some extra income.

Well quoted that ‘Life balance is a myth’. Indeed, a person lives one life, all partitioned in stages, with its distinct hue and significance. And, truly, work life and personal life are not separated. In the expanse of time, it matters most how we schedule and perform actions and reciprocate to others, with sensibility and suitability. With determination, we can experience certainty and control, and life phenomenally becomes simpler. Thanks for your comments Jerry Fletcher

Mohammed, As a client of mine pointed out in webinar I was reviewing yesterday, "Life balance is a myth. Your work life and your personal life are not separate. You have one life. You schedule all of it. It is up to you to make the best of it. You feel the impact of too much overtime. You long for the chance to just stop and think. You yearn to be with your loved ones. Fix it. It is one life. You are in control. Take the time to make yourself whole." And so it goes.
