Why People Don’t Quit Their Jobs?

“My job is giving me migraines, high blood
pressure, chest pains, and bleeding ulcers.
I'd quit, but I like their health plan.”


When there are differences and suspicions at workplaces, there’s sure likelihood of partiality and torture. Although employees suffer, but they’re afraid to quit their jobs because of their confusion and timidity.


One employee suffered, for almost more than one decade, insulting remarks, work pressure and mistreatment from his boss. Oftentimes, he silently persevered. Sometimes, he retorted back when he felt hurt. But, for the sake of livelihood and to keep the means of income on the go, he continued his job.


I know a person who’s at executive level and faces burdening work schedules that sometimes he feels like quitting the job and taking a break. What a person is supposed to do when there’s pressure from management, strict deadlines, unchangeable targets and continuous follow ups to get work done? Ah, tension doesn’t escape so easily.


Once, he said, with little relief, “You have to tolerate, fit in like a multi-tasker, put extra efforts and concentrate on priorities. At least, there’s a job for survival, which is better than unemployment”.


Typically, some employees relish their jobs so much that neither they want to train someone for replacement nor desire to quit from their safe positions.


For example, a senior payroll officer, in a company, is working since more than two decades. No one except him prepares staff salaries. With good memory and speed, he’s expert in payroll software and excel sheets. With ease, he gathers employees’ time-sheets and calculates overtime, allowances and deductions. Now, he’s in sixties and, at times, he blunders a little, but he’s still passionate to continue his job.

In fact, the management tried a lot that someone gets trained under him as an assistant. But, all in vain. The truth is that he teaches to none the details and procedures of his workflow, and those who worked under him learnt few rudiments of his work.


In some cases, qualified employees who experience themselves in wrong positions are always unhappy. Strangely, they have time to express their woes, but they have no time to think about maneuvering their career by quitting their present jobs and finding good work opportunities. Perhaps, they’re afraid of losing their jobs, and after that foreseeing trouble in getting jobs as per their expectations.


Actually, to assess one's own abilities, think about a shift in career and make an exit from one's present job needs a lot of confidence. Fearfulness itself is a failure. If you know how capable you are and how you can manage changes, then be bold and do things differently.


For instance, an eligible applicant was hired as a freelancer in an organization, and he was promised, that, after few months, he’ll be appointed as a permanent employee. Even after a year and more nothing happened. But, when the employer wasn’t truthful in his promise, then there wasn’t any logic to harbor hopes and continue on the freelancer position. Finally, that person, decided to apply for a job and make an exit. Fortunately, he was shortlisted, based on his competencies, interviewed and selected by a startup company.


If a person doesn’t want to garner confidence, is unwilling to find a right opportunity or feels fearful to take a right decision, then no worthwhile change happens. Well, some employees dislike changes and feel uncomfortable to accept new challenges or different working environment.


On the contrary, some employees, who after turning old and frail, love their positions. Even after making real estate, savings and means of surplus income, they don’t want to lose their jobs. 


Here’s an interesting story: A well-off person is working on a job since last three decades. In the past, he had built multi-family residential complex on which he gets rental income, in prime places he owns spacious vacant lands and has enough savings in his bank accounts. His one daughter is doing dentistry and the other pursuing high school studies. His only son went to United States for studies, and now he has high aims to settle down in US and get married. By the way, he has no plans to return back to his native country. What now? Wife and daughters in one place, son living in US and this wealthy husband, in his old age, is living a lonesome life of an emigrant in a different country. What are the uses of riches and for what purpose dispersed lives in different directions? 


Strangely, he still wants to continue his job and doesn’t want to quit. Ah, what a selfishness, suffering and stupidity!
