Our international client is looking for a Protection Engineer to join their operations in Saudi Arabia.


Job Purpose

Protect the electrical power system via using protection relays metering systems and related switchgear and instrumentation from abrupt abnormal operating conditions causing damage leading to power outages affecting in Power Generation and Water Production facilities Yanbu-1 including generator protections and support to electrical maintenance section to verify and adjust Synchronizing relays and Excitation protection levels.


Roles and responsibilities

  • Supervise the maintenance of testing and calibrating relays: yest and maintain digital relays, conduct tripping tests, prepare relevant reports, repair and replace, as necessary, and update data for SAP software.
(Preventive maintenance represents 90% of maintenance activities:
Protection as scheduled cycle in Yanbu-1 Power generation and Water production facilities).

  • Supervise the correction of faults and modification of relay settings in the protection system as notified in the system or observed by maintenance crews. This includes repair, replacement and recalibration of relays and related circuitry.
  • Provide support to electrical maintenance team to verify excitation system protections and synchronizing relay functions, calibrations/ simulations.
  • Improve plant reliability and integrity of equipment's, system and propose best alternate technologies for the obsolete technical reports of TSR studies, another technical studies request. Ensure adherence to codes, regulations and standards while preparation of such reports.
  • Participate in the review of specifications, design and schematic submittals relevant to Protection and control systems for projects under consideration in Plant facilities as needed.
  • Witness Commissiong and testing of control and protection relays, related instrumentation and switchgear, prepare report on findings, make recommendations for corrective action and sign relevant acceptance.
  • Based on referred plant problems, investigate Electrical Protection system abnormalities, study the root cause of malfunction and provide recommendations to rectify the problem/ abnormality.
  • Conduct investigation of major equipment failures, prepare report and recommend appropriate remedial action and submit to higher level of supervision.
  • Update protection maintenance and related activities records, safe keeping of operations manuals, work orders and notifications for future reference and make appropriate data entries into SAP system.
  • Organise and supervise the activities and work of subordinates to ensure that all work withing a specific area of Protection Engineering activity is carried out in an efficient manner which is consistent with operating procedures and policy.
  • Monitor the financial performance of a given area of activity versus budgets so that areas of unsatisfactory performance are identified and rectified promptly, and potential performance improvement opportunities are captitalised upon.
  • Recommend improvements to departmental procedure and direct the implementation of instructions and controls covering a specific area of Electrical Protection Engineering activity so that all relevant procedural/ legislative requirements are fulfilled while delivering a quality, costeffective service to customers.
  • Ensure compliance to all relevant safety, quality and environmental management procedures and controls within a defined area of Electrical Protection Engineering activity to guarantee employee safety.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 57 years in Engineering technical support, Project & Design experience and Plant experience within the Electrical Protection engineering discipline in a Power and Water utility.
  • Wide exposure in relevant plants and equipment (specially GTG, STG, MSF Desal, SWPH, RO-Plant, Wastewater treatment plants), operations and maintenance.
  • Experience in technical evaluation of Electrical Protection design.
