Living a Purposeful Life

Life’s stretch, from birth to death, is a definite duration. No one lives a little more and no one dies a little early. When the stroke of death comes, none can escape. Definitely, righteous life before death is an immense blessing, bounty and merit. And to comprehend well the verities of life and live a purposeful life is all success.

Life is full of lessons, ordeals and parables. When we peep into it, with diverse perspectives, we learn a lot for bettering our lives and souls.

What it means to live a life with no passion for humanity? What it means to gain learning and wisdom when we fail to judge between right and wrong? What it means to call ourselves humans when we feel not others’ sufferings? What it means to have wealth or worldly success when we become heartless and fail to sympathize others? What it means to live in happiness when we bother not our neighbors and help them in times of hardships? What it means to have high credentials when we lack good manners?

I have heard about good people who, from their own earnings and wealth, helped others. Indeed, passion for humanitarian efforts is a prized virtue. What’s the use of our riches and wealth when we spend not a portion of it in charities and for humanitarian causes?

During my school days, I had a good classmate whose father, at that time, reached to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). He joined the police department as a Sub-Inspector and in his whole journey of police career, he cherished honesty and disliked corruption and taking bribes.

Well, in certain fields of work and occupations, one finds hidden opportunities for receiving bribes and causing deception through unlawful ways. Under the influence of corruption and kickbacks, a single consent or simple signature can alter the whole process and spoil the system. In fact, when a person isn’t ashamed of anything, then he does what he wants.

Once, I heard about an entrepreneur who, almost a century ago, founded a medical factory. With the uniqueness of its products, the company remained well on the path of continuous progress. The noteworthy habit of the founder, in those early times, was to move around on the streets in the middle of the night, with a pack of woolen blankets in his car. Wherever he saw poor, homeless people sleeping in a shabby clothes, he used to put blankets over them and leave some cash or food near them. Indeed, when we feel others’ pain in our hearts, then that’s the sympathy, and with this sincere reaction, we become humane.

Whoever be your neighbor. It’s utterly sinful when you live happily, with all essentials and comforts and your neighbor suffers in poverty or in some difficulty. How can we be good in our lives when we aren’t good to our neighbors?

I have seen a person who was well literate, wealthy and successful businessman. Without any speculation or whims, he used to support orphans, poor widows and needy people with charities. To some, he gave generous loans and asked them to repay at their own convenience, and those who did not paid back, he liberally excused them. At the workplace, he behaved not like a proud owner, but he treated his workers in a courteous and cordial ways and took care of them like a patron and mentor.

At the end, it’s worth saying that ‘Without being courteous, sympathetic and supportive to others what it means to be a spiritual person’? 

Let’s shun hatred and live in harmony—and that very humanitarian step leads us to happiness.
