Lack of Leadership

Lack of Leadership

da73c916.jpg

That company lacks leadership where there are democratic departments.

Sounds strange, isn’t that? Yes, when departments work independently in silos with least interaction and teamwork, then the company gets hijacked and every department gets disconnected from others. What could happen when there’s no connectivity between the department heads? Probably, every department turns out like a superstore.

If there’s no competent leader, at the helm, to maneuver a company and its operations, then everyone will realize the mess, but no one dares to disclose the truth. No one wants to lose their liberties. And every department head tends to work without any external control or pressure. That’s how the culture drifts away without good leadership.

Actually, you will find departmental teams in weekly meetings for discussions on key themes and follow ups. But when they split, they’ll show their own obstinacy and slackness. A couple of days’ task stretches to weeks. And a week task goes on pending to months. No one wants to be a whistleblower. Perhaps, silence is better and no one wants to be stupid by making a propaganda. Who bothers, correct?

In a company, there was a new department setup. Planning was done. Procurement process made its own way. Expensive equipment and gadgets were imported. But, no one realized what was required and what was unneeded. Except few, rest of the items turned out to be of no use. When investigated why the items were procured when there wasn’t any need of those items, then the responsible team gave a futile reply. Well, they said, ‘If we didn’t follow up with the purchase requisition, surely we would have been under pressure.’ Silly feedback, isn’t that?

In another case, when an honest clerk reported regular discrepancies in travel itineraries of a top-ranking manager, then the section head silenced him. He said that why should we bother ourselves with this vain scrutiny and conclusions when the management is sleeping. Why to wake them up?

That’s how, in some companies, it happens and no one cares to catch malpractices.

Well, unless and until someone comes to the top and take the rudder to run the company, then nothing good happens. You should think of credible and influential leadership that can harness vision, set goals and invoke loyalty in the workforce.

Nothing else, but lack of leadership creates chaos, lowers employee confidence and spoils the workplace culture. In absence of fairness, employees feel demotivated and disconnected

No leadership means complicated issues, unspoken problems, demanding employees, unwilling to changes, declining optimism, no sense of responsibility, no team spirit and frequent unruliness.

If a company has a profitable product portfolio, it runs on its own. Nothing to worry. But, successful operations transpire from strong leadership. That means an able leader got to take full accountability, without any fear of firing or delaying to hire competent personnel. Effective execution matters.

As a strong leader, when you have a vivid vision, then nothing should hinder behind. Move on to make the company culture coherent and enthusiastic. Good wishes ahead!

Dear Jerry Fletcher Sir, Thanks for your inspiring feedback. Indeed, leadership is a very tricky thing. Some deem it like a chessboard game, with more fiddling and shrewdness. Definitely, able leadership and relevant capabilities count most. I have seen places where someone get hired in the wrong position because of his merited skills in some other field. But, in the long run, like not putting square pegs into square holes, there’s mess of mismanagement and mistaken decisions that leads to loss rather than profitability.

Mohammed, Leadership is a very tricky thing. It is surrounded by myths and yet one of the most sought after capabilities. It is difficult in many cases for the founder of an organization to recognize, recruit and enable leaders. Too often people are hired that are square pegs that are filling round holes. As one of my clients says, "To grow a company you need a strategy based on the reality of the situation focused on specific goals with executive roles defined and people selected that fit the role and the focus." It is sort of like putting square pegs into square holes. And so it goes.

Dear Harvey Lloyd I appreciate your thoughtful feedback. Thanks so much. From your comments, what I perceive is that in the presence of clear vision and set of goals, an able leader takes the lead to control and guide his followers, who are wise enough and willing to follow the leader for the desired outcomes. Yes, that’s true and make things more simple and manageable. It’s weird when a company charts its own vision and, during the many phases of diversification and changes in management, slips away from its vision and objectives. Sometimes, so unbearable becomes the disintegrated culture that there remains no way to see internal good changes except to hire an influential leader or highly paid consultant to mend the company culture.

If we could look at "leadership" fundamentally it gives us some deep questions we must ask ourselves before we take on the responsibility. Leadership implies that: 1.There is a vision that is reasonable in its attempts to accomplish some higher process that benifits those who would buy/participate to their own progress. 2. A reasonable set of goals/milestones that have high probability of meeting the goal. 3. A leader who can manage the unknowns and people are willing to follow 4. A group of people who value wise are satisfied and are willing to follow the leader in the hopes of increasing that value they receive. Each of these areas break into many other areas of understanding and actionable items. A leader, if not a start-up of their own, must look at the group of four areas and determine if "they" can apply their skills within the four areas into success. It doesn't mean that someone else's skills couldn't manage success given the landscape. This is the first choice of any leader. The main issue in leadership is developing a sound four core vision, and the worst part is subtracting those who cant conform. Leaders do not have but so much time to win others over to their vision. Given 1&2 the time span is usually around 90-120 days, short of some emergency which would shorten the days. Great piece and thoughts, leadership is a well versed topic that i believe we have gotten away from the core components mentioned your post.

Dear Mohammed Abdul Jawad- this is a topic that interests me as reflected by the several articles I wrote about leadership. Definitely, having a purpose and direction that a leader con communicate to the followers to make them feel they own them will be a successful leader. I would add that also his role then gets less controlling as the team becomes self-organizing.
