Ugh…sometimes one gets sick of work timings that starts a little after the sunrise and ends at sunset. 


Indeed, best are those companies that operate on a 5-day week basis, with the working time per week not exceeding 40 hours, and having a two-day weekend without the need to put in extra hours during the working days.


A shorter week, with shortened working hours is wonderful because it boosts the lifestyle of employees, and companies, definitely, experience an increase in productivity.


On the contrary, long labor hours, stretched double working shifts, and then 6-day week oozes one’s energy out. Void of enthusiasm, often employees who work long hours find daily work routine cumbersome and boring. How exhausted becomes life pattern…because one spends the whole day at work, and finds a scanty portion to rest, to be with family…as if spending short night for sleep at home, and then back to work next day.


With all work, and less rest turns one’s life stressful, with declining stamina. No time for socializing with families, relatives and friends. No leisure activities, no time for exercise, no full night sleep…then, what else? Without these vital elements, one is likely to suffer from fatigue and fretfulness. One who spends whole day, with long hours, would rather prefer to have an escape from work…because prolonged working hours dulls a person, and becoming a workaholic is no sign for an energetic life.


In most workplaces, daily overtime is mandatory for employees and working regularly on weekends is a requisite simply because productivity is the criteria, and manpower is at short. Well, those who have some urgency, they can take a day off once-in-a-month, with permission. With all those more hours at work, employers deprive their workers of rest and relaxation. On the whole, fatigued employees’ performance at workplaces will be low, and with juggling shifts and sleep deficiencies they only become sluggish and distracted. This is all very true.


Five-day workweek, in fact, enhances one’s personal life and eases one’s mood for more recreation and enjoyment. Who doesn’t want to have more time with family? But, damn this hectic work…it exceeds, so also working hours extends. For the sake of pending work and productivity, employees cling to overtime schedules—and, in the long term, one may notice them, with drooping bodies, weary and emotionless, as if their souls wanting to recline for some rest.


It’s worthwhile to have five-days-a-week, with 40-hour ruling that will really make a difference and be more beneficial for employees. Interesting perspective! Back to home early from work, they can relax more and be lively. And, with two-day off, it makes more sense for them to have more personal time with their families, friends and for their own interests. This way, they will be healthier and they can look ahead for a better work-life balance.


Conclusively, with the reduction in work hours, employers can make the workplaces more healthy, reasonable and productive, and with loyal, dedicated and happy employees, profits will follow. Isn’t that sufficient? O, yea…who will defy it?

I agree with all of the thoughts here but would like to shed some light on the reason we work. The reason we work is more important than the statistical data of production vs employee engagement. We work to support our hopes, dreams and family.........ultimately our community. Leaders should recognize that they play a secondary role in the lives of their teams. The teams should see employment as a means to an end, not the meaning of life. These two areas, production and employee means can be held in tension with success. If teams feel that work has become their identity they lose a sense of self determination and ultimately motivation to go beyond the job description. We promote family and recognize that our firm plays a second role in our team’s lives. Of course balance must be maintained within this paradigm, but most folks love to work at our firm and seek the balance on their own. If we must sacrifice family and personal identity for production we stop.
